"Wall Street 2 may have come out last week, but you ain't Shia playa." - Reverend Doctor Page
Today's post is focused on the generation behind me. I'm talking about the folks born in the mid 80s aka Generation Y. And I feel the need to talk about them because I'm starting to notice a few things, actually a few bad things, based on interaction and conversations with a few of them. I'm not saying these few people represent the whole generation but I will say I hope these few are not an indication of what we should expect from the generation. Now that I've set a record for saying "few" in one paragraph, let's focus on What's going on!
Before I go into the Honest man rant, let me explain a few things about Generation X. Growing up, the following things were either non existent or not fully developed yet: Internet, cell phones, instant messaging, google, facebook, twitter, blogs, mp3 players. You know what was the big thing when I was in high school? Pagers. Yep, they're like dinosaurs now, completely extinct. I mention these things because the above has historically transformed society to the point it's how we interact and view things today. Good or bad, the impact has been huge. Could you imagine if that stuff didn't exist today? Probably not if you were born starting from 1984 and on....
When the digital revolution started, it opened up a Pandora's box of new access into people's lives. Privacy is now a premium as you can learn a lot about an individual simpky by doing searches on the internet. It's kinda crazy if you think about it. If someone really wants to know about me, they can type in my name, and within seconds get a quick look at me. And that's what our society has morphed into, getting quick results, and using that information to make a faster mark on society.
One thing that troubles me with the digital revolution is the accompanying sense of entitlement that has also developed with it. I'm starting to see a trend in recent college graduates and first timers to Corporate America that they are entitled to making big decisions after less than 5 years in workplace. Are you shitting me? Maybe because I was brought up old school where the folks around me made me pay my dues before they put me down but that attitude is very prevalent today.
It's actually scary to be honest. Recently I've had conversations with a couple of folks and it worries me that one day I could be working for those people (although I'd quit my job before that happen LOL). One of those topics happens to be around promotion. They keep talking about how they deserved to be promoted. How they are doing so much more than their teammates. If you let them tell it, they've saved the world (translation company) from the evil doers of the world (translation competitors), and now they want the key to the city (translation promotion). Let me break away from proper English, to say "Yo what da fuck you talkin' 'bout Willis?"
I don't understand the sense of entitlement. You're doing a good job. Are you doing a great job? And are you doing a great job on a repeated basis? One thing I remember asking a peer who was adamant about being promoted was "Are you better than me?" That was because I wanted him to understand that you have teammates on your team and you have to constantly ask during promotion, are you better than your peers? And I don't mean your gut tells you yes type bullshit. I'm talking about the proof in the pudding. Are your accomplishments that much better than your teammates? Have you impacted the business more than your teammates? If you can definitely say yes to these, then you got an argument. But if you wavering, then um, pimp Imma need you to cool on the promotion talk.
The other thing that worries me is the lack of apathy to take advice. When I started working, I was very eager to learn from those that had been working longer than me, whether it was 5 years or 25 years. I was cocky but not in a sense where it showed through my actions and work. I kept my stuff humble until I had that definite I'm kickin' ass moment (which came around my 5 year mark). Now when I try to help others behind me, I just get blank looks. Or the typical "ok" response which means I know they don't give a shit about what I'm saying. And that's disappointing because I would like to think I could make a person successful based on my track record. But again the entitlement thing kicks in and it's frustrating.
Let me end with this. Like the above quote that started off this post, if you are not making a huge impact in your role, like say Shia is in Wall Street 2, then you need to know your role and shut your mouth. It's really that simple. No one is saying that you can't speak, or carry someone's football pads, or not be aggressive, or not seek to be successful. But you cannot go about it by arguing with cats that got skin in the game, or being bold to say a 20 year veteran is clueless or saying you deserve a promotion when you've brought in like 500K in revenue to a billion dollar business or telling someone they don't know what they are talking about when the only big you've done is run the student computer lab in college. Make sense? Get a clue Generation Y. I got faith in ya but damn ya'll do got me worried....
Think of yourself as Luke Skywalker and me as Yoda from Empire Strikes Back. In other words, "Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will." Take a good look in the mirror young folk, pay your dues, and understand I'm just trying to help you out. Let's end with some Marvin....
"Brotha brotha, far too many of you lying,
Brotha brotha brotha, far too many of you trying,
wiki sites (BROTHA), virtual fights (BROTHA) don't punish me (BROTHA) with your mental tease (BROTHA) promise me (BROTHA) that you will see (BROTHA) What's going on!"

You know it's been more than a year since the Honest Man has done an "Annoying Things" post? I should get like a Nobel Peace Prize for that alone because I've spared a lot of folks from being contestants on the Summer Jam screen, hell the Winter festival projector for that matter. BUT, there's been too much stupid shit recently for the Honest Man to ignore and it involves my fellow Mel Gibsons out there. Sorry man but Danny Glover's gotta speak on it today....
Point #1 - When a white person misuses the word "ghetto"
I don't know how many conversations I've been in with white people and anything that looks somewhat beneath them gets classified as ghetto. "Dude we were at some hotel and like a block behind us is the ghetto!" "We were in a place that was sooo ghetto!" Dumb ass do you even know what the ghetto is? Have you been to a ghetto? Here's a newsflash, while some places may not look like Beverly Hills, Trump Towers, or the Hamptons, not every place is quote Ghetto. The old Cabrini green projects in Chicago? Ghetto. The Cleveland Street area in Nashville? Ghetto. If you need more explaining peep this. But just saying a spot is ghetto because you saw one homeless cat or a rundown building does not qualify as ghetto. You wanna see a ghetto? I'll take you to a ghetto. But please stop spurting stupid shit and classifying everything as ghetto.
Point #2 - When a white person wants to spend time with you like you a couple
You know what I find fascinating about white people? The fact they they don't get tired of spending time with everybody. No disrespect but yo unless we a couple or are sharing a room together because we on a trip together, I don't want most of my non-sleeping hours spent with you. Take training for example. We in class all day, likely have gone to lunch too which adds up to 9-10 hrs together. Then when the work day is over, you talking about getting up for dinner. That's another 2 hours, possibly 3 if you start drinking and talking shit on someone you don't like. That's 13 hrs together. There are 24 hours in a day. You follow where I'm going with this. Get a clue chief! I mean what more do you want from me my blood? But yet if we oppose hanging out you get offended? Shit we offended that you don't know when to say when. We not saying we don't wanna hang out. We just saying we don't wanna hang out 13 hrs a day, 5 days in a row. Keep it moving!
Man I had to get that off the chest. You still down with rolling for donuts and coffee Mel? Or are you mentally saying Fuck You Danny Glover, fuck you and your group of oversensitive people. Well if you are, all I can do is shrug my shoulders, say "oh well", and start thinking how will I make it without you to help catch those bad guys. And then I start reading the beginning of this post and go oh yeah that's why :-). Keep trying to make your Lethal Weapon readers!

"A fat stomach never breeds fine thoughts" - St. Jerome
Do you ever watch Biggest Loser? Or Celebrity Fit Camp? Or Thintervention? These are shows about fat folks trying to lose weight. Yep no politically correct shit like "These shows focus on people with special needs who have a desire to emotionally separate themselves from a burning desire." I call it like I see it. Fat folks who want to lose weight. And the Honest Man is all for that, in fact I'm 100% behind them. Better to acknowledge the problem and repair it I say. But sometimes, I find humor in what I call fat people logic....
Fat people logic is when a fat person has this wacko way of rationalizing how they lose weight and what they eat to contribute to that weight loss. It's an internal thing where they have come up with a system to justify to themselves, it's ok what I am doing when externally, you or anyone else knows that it's wrong. Not following, let me give you an example.
I know this chick that's trying to lose weight. She's on her ps and qs with the constant running, drinking water, etc. We're at a spot one morning where I'm getting some donuts. She tells me that she'll pass because she ran earlier and eating the donut would defeat the purpose of the running. 100% correct and agree with her. I'm going for that moment that's fair...
But this is when fat people logic kicks in. So we go to a burger spot for lunch and she gets a burger with no trouble. Also factor in she ate deep dish pizza (with beer) the night before. So somewhere in between those meals, her internal rationale decided just the donut and nothing else was bad. Are you shitting me? I guess she figured only the donut would hurt the running. Or simply, donut bad, burger good. What the fuck??
Sometimes you gotta channel your inner fatty and know the difference between saying "I want to lose weight" and actually losing weight. It's almost like the classic Yoda saying "Do or Do not, there is not try." Translation fat boy, there's no in between for losing weight. Either you eating right to lose weight or you are eating wrong. But don't use some fucked up warped rationale to say it's okay if I eat that twinkie because I did 15 situps today. Do you hear me man???
I hate stupid logic. I love common sense. The former is what drives decisions like the example I mentioned above. The former is what so many have but so few use in their daily life. So it's on the Honest Man to help "guide" you in that decision. Next time you pass on a donut, I'm slapping your hand if you about to put a french fry in ya mouth. MESSAGE!!

"It's the Sport of Kings, Better than Diamond Rings...FOOTBALL!" - Wildcats Football Team
Alright today's message has been brought to you by a joint effort of the National Football League and Most Heterosexual Males Club across America. Ladies, Gays, Lesbians, the Heterosexual males who are not members, I mean no offense or you any harm. But seriously do you care about football starting tomorrow? Or at least for the reasons the MHM Club cares :-)? Well if you are offended, maybe my ode will remedy that problem...
"One more day until the circle is complete....
- One more day until pro football kicks off and thus unifying college and pro football games on my tv on a weekly (and sometimes daily) basis...
- One more day until I run through the annual rules with my boys when it comes to football and Daddy ("Unless you got a beer in your hand or the house is on fire, don't bother Daddy")
- One more day until I translate my wife's conversations into Charlie Brown language ("Woh woh woh woh woh")
- One more day until I'm checking my fantasy football standings like Tyrone Biggums checks his crack stash
- One more day until I break out the Titans jersey (vintage Eddie George) to celebrate football is back AND my Titans are ready to do work
- One more day until I call up K dawg and start singing "It's the sport of kings, better than diamond rings...."
Just one more day....."
Did that pull a smile on your face? Well if it didn't then tough titty cuz I don't give a shit anyway. Football starts in 24 hours.....
Fall. Football. Fun. Faded. Four words that sum up about the total chicanery that's about to happen now that my favorite season is rapidly upon us. And it's definitely better than diamond rings. FOOTBALL (Wildcats)!

Damn it has it really been a year since the Honest Man gave out hugs to some special friends?? I've been neglecting my duties or ignoring the obvious as I hope folks will do better. But nope this week's transpired events called for me to stop the foolishness, duck into the booth, and POOF, get into the HugMobile!!
Unlike the previous "In need of a hug" posts, there is no daily dose this week of stupid acts, just a combination of random things that have occurred in the past 2 weeks. But like the previous posts, the Honest Man definitely knows somewhere, these folks could use a hug from yours truly....
8/26 - Father attacks Vice Principal. This happened in my home state. Man's son gets in fight. No problem. Man's two other sons and older brothers of Man's son jump in and help baby brother. Again no problem (some of you may say that's a problem but I'm a family dude, you jump on my sibling, then I'm jumping on you. Period). Man comes to school open house, allegedly jumps assistant principal in the office. That folks is a problem. BIG problem. The Man needs a hug. And prayer!
8/30 - This one involves a politician in my current state. The politician decided to take the Sprint Family and Friends Network slogan and apply it to her job. Since 2005, over 25K worth of scholarships handed out to grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and close friends' children. And in 2010, she goes I didn't know what I was doing was wrong. Seriously. That's why she needs a hug from the Honest Man. To let her know that it won't be alright and yes you were wrong. I mean based on what her bank account statement, why didn't she just give them the money outright? Do you see where I'm going with this?? If you still are not connecting the dots, you need a hug too :-). (Hint: Uncle Sam).
9/2 - Everybody's favorite rapper that can't stay out of trouble and his down ass chick/wifey were busted in LA the hard way. What makes it worse is ole boy literally JUST got out of jail. You don't think he needed to be more careful considering the track record. And why didn't his down ass chick, who's got her own fame, say before they got in the car, "You know maybe it's not a good idea"?? This one calls for a group hug folks!
Same story, different year, same result. Again, we got to get our shit together people. I understand we are prone to moments where we lose our collective senses and do dumb shit. But in a few of the above cases, I mean hot damn you REPEATED shit that you know was wrong. Shoot I'm giving myself a hug for just thinking about it :-).

I finally saw (500) Days of Summer. Read about it via different media outlets before it hit theaters. Watched as it critically exploded upon the scene when others saw it. And now I can see why they love it. It's a great story, right up there with Love Jones in my personal opinion for the honesty of the film. But that's another day, another post.
Today I'm posting the song that plays in the end credits, Mumm'ra's She's Got You High. Yep they get points for taking the name of the villainous character from Thundercats. But love the song because of the lyrics and nice mid tempo beat.

Aw my dear readers. It's September. Which means it's time to break out the birthday candles because the Honest Man's favorite month is here. And it coincidentally happens to be the GREATEST month of the year too. Don't believe, go ask Earth Wind and Fire, they made a song about how great September is :-0
